Pommard is a village in the Côte de Beaune, to the south of Beaune itself, and is situated in an area of iron-rich soils. The wines are consequently among the most robust and tannic reds of Burgundy, often with above average cellaring potential. Deep garnet in the glass, and offering a bouquet of redcurrant jelly, toast and subtle smokiness. Full and amply textured on the palate, with dense, savoury-sweet fruit and tightly wound tannins. Best with nutty, mature cheeses such as cheddar, manchego or raclette.
