Description

RVF 18/20, Bettane & Desseauve 17.5/20 (Coup de Coeur)

100% Cabernet Franc. Biodynamic. This stunning bottling is drawn from a recently acquired (2011), old-vine vineyard; a tiny, single parcel (0.72-hectares) at Dampierre, southwest of Saumur. It's planted with 108-year-old Cabernet Franc vines (including many ungrafted vines) on clay-limestone and silex subsoil, a terroir Thierry describes as 'très masculin'. These are the oldest vines in the Germain stable and they are certainly some of, if not the, oldest Cab Franc vines in the Loire. They sit, thick as tree trunks, like ancient watchmen overlooking the Loire River. As the name suggests, Germain believes these ancient root systems hold the 'memories' of the region and its wines, perhaps recalling how they used to taste before phylloxera. Sites of this maturity are rare anywhere in the wine world; in the Loire Valley, they are almost unheard of. In only its third vintage, the wine has already been idolised by the French press and is well on its way to becoming one of the few Loire reds to achieve a genuine cult status. From 2014, Germain is picking this vineyard a little earlier - looking for more croquant (or crunchy) fruit structure. The wine is fermented in a tronconique Stockinger vat and raised in the same size, 25 hecto foudre as the Marginal cuvée.
