‘Les Saint-Georges’ is considered to be one of the most ancient plots of vines, already planted in the year 1,000. At the end of the nineteenth century, the village of ‘Nuits’ was given the authorisation to add the famous ‘Saint-Georges’ cru to its name. This would be Nuits-St-Georges' Grand Cru, if it had one, and the village, originally named Nuits, took its name at some point. Les St-Georges is on an approximately equal footing with other "underrated" Premiers Crus such as Volnay's Taillepieds and Clos de Chênes, Pommard's Rugiens, and Gevrey-Chambertin's Clos St-Jacques.
